N2  - The source of distrust between people in a diverse society like Cirebon City is not merely from the religion itself but also other societal domains such as the economic situation, politics, social life, and culture. The level of issue complexity then increased as pre-existing inter-ethnic tensions are associated with inter-religious issues. In dealing with such predicament, this
research presents how Communication Theology reveals problems that occur in inter-religious
engagement between Chinese-Indonesian Christian Protestant and Cirebonese Muslim youth. It describes and analyses how these two communicate inter-religiously and discover the role of Communication Theology in creating a space for inter-religious dialogue among youth in Cirebon. It takes into account the Communication Accommodation Theory by Howard Giles and applies interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach. The first result of this research is the list of communication barriers between Chinese-Indonesian Christian Protestants and Cirebonese
Muslims in which appeared firstly from the wrong perception of other?s religion and ethnicity.
Secondly, different degrees of accommodation in social problems created insensitive feelings of
other?s misery. Yet there is still a possibility of inter-religious dialogue between these two parties.
The analysis and theological reflections further explain that human is a multi-dimensional in his
relations with others. On this account, inter-religious conflicts between Chinese-Indonesian Christian Protestant and Cirebonese Muslims in Cirebon City cannot simply put the blame on certain theological understanding but needs to be seen as a part of a dynamic communication process.
